Mouth of the Arno

The Mouth of the Arno

Where the Arno river meets the Tyrrhenian Sea, a unique landscape unfolds: fresh and salt waters mingle, fishing huts dot the banks and sailboats glide among the reeds.

The Retoni: traditional fishing huts

The retoni are traditional fishing balance huts on stilts that characterise the mouth of the Arno. These wooden structures, with their square nets, are a symbol of local fishing tradition.

Some retoni are still used for fishing, while others are small retreats for fishing and socialising. At sunset, their silhouettes against the pink sky offer an extraordinary spectacle.

Sailing and water sports

The mouth is a gathering point for sailing enthusiasts. The Navicelli Canal and the final river stretch host sailing clubs, sailing schools and kayaking.

Boat excursions along the Arno towards Pisa's centre offer an unusual perspective on the city.

A transitional ecosystem

The mouth area is an ecosystem extremely rich in biodiversity. Mullet, sea bass and eels swim up the river, while herons, cormorants and kingfishers inhabit the banks.

The landscape changes with seasons and tides. In winter, fog wraps the retoni in a surreal atmosphere; in summer, the sun ignites colours of water and vegetation.
