The Medici Aqueduct is an imposing 17th-century hydraulic engineering work commissioned by the Grand Dukes of Tuscany to carry water from Monte Pisano springs to Pisa.

The work of the Grand Dukes

Commissioned by Ferdinando I de' Medici and completed under Cosimo II, the aqueduct brought pure water to the city suffering from water shortages.

The roughly 6-kilometre route exploits the natural slope with arches, underground conduits and settling tanks: a Renaissance engineering masterpiece.

The monumental arches

The most spectacular stretch is the series of arcades between Asciano and Pisa. Stone and brick arches up to 10 metres high and nearly a kilometre long are an imposing presence in the landscape.

Walking along the route reveals the construction mastery. At various points you can still see original pipes and remains of public fountains fed by the aqueduct.

The aqueduct today

Today the Medici Aqueduct is a historical monument marking the landscape between Monte Pisano and Pisa. Walkable or cyclable, its route is a much-appreciated cultural itinerary.

Its arches frame views of countryside and hills, and on summer evenings become the natural backdrop for sunset walks.
