Piazza dei Miracoli, Pisa

Pisa

A historic city crossed by the Arno, Pisa reveals its glorious past as a Maritime Republic through medieval tower-houses, Renaissance palaces, Romanesque churches and the medieval walls that still encircle it. From here came Leonardo Fibonacci, who introduced Arabic numerals to the West, Galileo Galilei and Antonio Pacinotti, inventor of the dynamo.

Piazza dei Miracoli

The monumental complex of Piazza dei Miracoli has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. The Leaning Tower, the Romanesque Cathedral, the Baptistery and the Monumental Cemetery form one of the most celebrated architectural ensembles in the world.

The cathedral, with its loggiate facade and golden apse mosaics, is a masterpiece of Pisan Romanesque. The Baptistery, the largest in Italy, is renowned for the extraordinary acoustics of its dome. The area is completed by the Opera del Duomo Museum and the Sinopie Museum.

The Lungarni and the museums

The Lungarni extend over 6 km along the river, offering one of Tuscany's most evocative strolls. Noble palaces are reflected in the Arno, creating a unique atmosphere especially at sunset. Along the way you will find the Gothic church of Santa Maria della Spina, Palazzo Blu and the Palazzo Reale National Museum.

Not to be missed is the Ancient Ships Museum, housed in the Medici Arsenals: an extraordinary archaeological site with perfectly preserved Roman vessels found during excavations at San Rossore station. Piazza dei Cavalieri, with the Palazzo della Carovana frescoed by Vasari, is the heart of academic life.

The Pisan June and traditions

Every June, Pisa celebrates its patron saint San Ranieri and maritime traditions with a month of events. The Luminara (June 16th) illuminates the Lungarni with thousands of wax candles; the next day the Historic Regatta is held. The last Saturday of the month features the Gioco del Ponte, a spectacular costumed re-enactment on the Arno.

Outside the centre, the Romanesque Basilica of San Piero a Grado is worth a visit — built where, according to tradition, the apostle Peter first landed in Italy. A few kilometres away, the beaches of Marina di Pisa, Tirrenia and Calambrone offer pine forests, beach resorts, amusement parks and WWF reserves.
