A tradition of excellence

The Normale selects Italy's best students each year through an extremely competitive exam. Students receive free education, board and lodging, and access to top-level laboratories and libraries.

Alumni include physicists, mathematicians, writers and politicians who shaped Italian history: from Enrico Fermi to Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, from Giovanni Gentile to Luigi Russo.

Piazza dei Cavalieri

The historic seat of the Normale is the Palazzo della Carovana in Piazza dei Cavalieri, one of Pisa's most elegant urban spaces. The facade, decorated with graffiti and coats of arms by Giorgio Vasari, is a Renaissance masterpiece.

The square also hosts the church of Santo Stefano dei Cavalieri, the Palazzo dell'Orologio (where Count Ugolino from Dante's Inferno was imprisoned) and the State Archives.
