Rocca della Verruca

Rocca della Verruca

Rocca della Verruca crowns the summit of Monte Verruca (537 m) overlooking the entire Pisan plain. Reachable via a panoramic hike, it offers one of the most spectacular views in all of Tuscany.

History of the fortress

The fortress dates back to the Lombard era and was contested between Pisa, Lucca and Florence. In the 15th century it underwent major military works during wars between Tuscan city-states.

The ruins preserve perimeter walls, remains of the main tower and cisterns for rainwater. A restoration project is currently underway.

The hike

The most classic trail starts from Calci climbing through holm oak woods and Mediterranean scrubland. The medium-difficulty route takes about 2 hours.

Along the way you encounter dry-stone walls, rural ruins and, in spring, orchids, anemones and blooming broom.

The view from the summit

From the summit the panorama is 360 degrees: west to the plain, sea and Corsica; north to the snow-capped Apuan Alps; east to the Lucchese hills; south to Livornese hills and Elba.

At sunset the view is particularly magical: golden light illuminates Pisa's tower, the city's red rooftops and the Tyrrhenian expanse. It is Monte Pisano's most iconic point.
